Pro-Life doctors Strategize on Saving Women's Lives
The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists
(AAPLOG) conducted its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. to strategize
on the global reduction of maternal mortality in light of Millennium
Development Goal #5 (reducing maternal mortality) and related pressure
on governments to increase access to abortion. Doctors from Africa, who
struggle daily to save women's lives during pregnancy and childbirth, relayed the tactics used to promote abortion in their countries and their fears that legalization of abortion would drastically increase the rate of Parliamentary
maternal mortality. Doctors from Latin America shared their success in reducing maternal deaths by educating women on safe delivery and the Network for

Abortion Activist

The Council of Europe approved a resolution in support of a report issued by leading pro-abortion parliamentarian, Christine Mc Cafferty, the rapporteur on the Social, Health and Family Affairs Committee. The report, "Fifteen years since the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action", advances a false interpretation of the Cairo conference and promotes a pro-abortion agenda. The report attempts to pressure countries to increase access to abortion as part of their supposed obligations under Cairo and to achieve Millennium Development Goal # 5- improve maternal health. The summary statement of the report includes this falsehood: "A range of family planning, including emergency contraceptives, safe abortion, skilled birth attendants and obstetric emergency care must be accessible, affordable, appropriate and acceptable to all, irrespective of age, community or country." In fact, Cairo stated: "In no case should abortion be promoted as a method of family planning"and many pro-life countries objected to any advancement of abortion as a so-called right. It was also recognized at Contact PNCI
Cairo in the ICPD Programme of Action para 8.25: "Any measures or changes related to abortion within the health system can only be determined at the national or local level according to the national legislative process." Clearly, Cairo determined that countries have the sovereign right to ban or restrict abortion and determine their own laws and policies on abortion. Parliamentary Network
for Critical Issues
Regrettably, pro-life amendments to the McCafferty report proposed by parliamentarians Luca Volunte, Ronan Mullen and Marco Gatti were rejected, one losing by a mere three votes. The Friday session was poorly attended with less than 70 of 318 eligible parliamentarians present for the PNCI notes that Christine Mc Cafferty is an international activist for the legalization of abortion and is a frequent speaker at parliamentary forums on population, development, and reproductive health hosted by UNFPA, IPPF and Marie Stopes International. As an MP in the UK, McCafferty chairs the All-Party Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health and also the All-Party Compassion in Dying Group which promotes assisted US Foreign Policy Focuses on "Reproductive Rights and Health"
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking on Cairo 15, renewed the United States' commitment to the 15 year old ICPD's Programme of Action, a document which the pro-abortion lobby has tried to use to provide access to the 'full range of reproductive health services', including abortion. Abortion activists proclaimed support for Clinton's speech which declared that women's "reproductive rights and health" are a priority of US foreign policy and which highlighted the sweeping changes the Obama All news articles include links to Administration has already implemented in one year to increase access to original source. PNCI cannot verify that the information contained in the Clinton expressed her pleasure in partnering with NGOs, in particular with International Planned Parenthood (IPPF), and referenced how the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is partnering with IPPF in Uganda. PNCI researched the IPPF affiliate in Uganda-Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU)-and learned of RHU's many nefarious activities to promote abortion in Uganda despite Uganda's strict life of the mother pro-life law. RHU praises its own central role lobbying for the legalization of abortion, its work with the media to sway public opinion on abortion and even laments that "Catholic physicians bring their values with them" when delivering health care. PNCI welcomes first hand in-country reports from readers on the activities of NGOs funded by USAID and treats all such reports confidentially. Kenya: Parliament Rewriting Constitution, Religious Leaders Call for
Protection of Life

The harmonized draft of the new Kenyan constitution is currently in a legislative committee awaiting action before moving to a vote before the entire parliament. There is great concern that the new constitution fails to protect the pre-born child and fails to define life as beginning at conception. Without protection for the inviolable dignity of life from conception, legalized abortion could be next. The new draft constitution has received strong criticism from religious leaders. The Kenya Episcopal Conference, representing the Catholic bishops of Kenya, issued a statement expressing their strong opposition to any such change in law, "Conscious of our divine mandate to promote the culture of life and to stand for the inviolable right of every person to life from the moment of conception to natural death, we strongly feel we cannot be party to any legislation that supports a culture of death." Canon Peter Karanja of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) said the NCCK is ready to mobilize a campaign if necessary. "Should the harmonized draft remain as it is without defining when life begins, we shall explore legitimate options as stipulated under the Kenya Constitution Review Act, 2008 to seek amends. What is clear is that this issue needs to be taken seriously as it will definitely take centre-stage with regards to the referendum," said Karanja. If the constitution is approved by the parliament, a national referendum will then take place. US: Over 30 Members of Congress Address March for Life
Over 30 Members of the US Congress addressed the hundreds of thousands
of participants in the March for Life in Washington, D.C. marking the
anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion on demand
for all nine months of pregnancy. The committed crowd heard from
lawmakers who thanked them for their hard work to convince lawmakers to keep abortion funding out of new health care legislation. Other Members spoke about the changing tide of public opinion in favor of life. Congressman Chris Smith, Co-chair of the House Pro-Life Caucus, spoke about the harmful effects of abortion on women's health and charged that there is a "hidden agenda" to suppress the numerous studies which validate the harmful effects of abortion including an associated risk of breast cancer to women who abort their children and the adverse health effects abortion has on subsequent children who are more likely to be born prematurely. Other speakers included post abortive women and pro-life and religious leaders. His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, head of the Orthodox Church in America, accompanied by numerous bishops, priests, and seminarians was welcomed at the March. The very presence of the Orthodox clergy was as a sign of increased ecumenical cooperation and agreement to work together to protect the sanctity of life. Metropolitan Jonah spoke of increased Orthodox participation in the fight for life, saying, "I believe it's time for the Orthodox to step out in the public square," he said. "Until now, our participation has been very limited." hilippines: Parliamentarians Push for Ban of Misoprostol
Legislators in the Philippines are seeking passage of a bill to ban the sale of
the abortion-inducing drug misoprostol or cytotec. While originally used for
gastric ulcers, the drug produces uterine contractions and is increasingly
used off-label to induce abortion. Sponsored by Buhay Party
Representatives Irwin Tieng and Ma Carissa Coscolluela, House Bill 7000
seeks to penalize the sale and distribution of misoprostol. Currently, the
sale of misoprostol is extremely limited but is available from sidewalk
vendors. Pro-abortion organizations encourage the sale of the drug and
self-use by women for abortion.
Russia: Low Population Resulting from High Abortion Rate
As Russia continues to tackle a declining population, Health Minister
Tatyana Golikova has called for a reduction in abortions. Russia, which
currently faces a significantly low birth rate, also has the highest abortion
rate in the world. In 2008, there were 1.714 million births and 1.234 million
abortions. Further, Marina Tarasova, deputy head of the St. Petersburg
Research Institute for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, stated in 2008 that high abortion rate was also causing high
infertility, as evidenced by the 5.5 million infertile couples in the nation.
Leaders continue to look for ways to encourage births and reduce
abortions.
