SARCOMA FOUNDATION OF AMERICA HONORS
BEVERLYE HYMAN FEAD WITH COURAGE
Maryland (January 2, 2008) — The Sarcoma Foundation of America, an organization dedicated to increased research funding and advocacy to find new and
better therapies for sarcoma patients, has named Beveryle Hyman Fead as a
recipient of their 2009 Courage Award.
"The Courage Awards are the highest awards presented by the Sarcoma Foundationof America. It is given annually to a sarcoma patients who, through his or her publicor private actions, writings or personal efforts, resulted in the inspiration to othersarcoma patients that they do not have to be physically, emotionally or spirituallydefeated by sarcoma or a diagnosis of sarcoma,” said Mark Thornton, M.D., Ph.D.,President, Sarcoma Foundation of America. “Beveryle Hyman Fead embodies allthat and more.” Beverlye's story of courage and inspiration in her battle with leiomyosarcomamakes her an eminently qualified person to receive this award. In 2002, her doctor predicted that withouttreatment she'd live only two more months. But for Hyman Fead, a debilitating course of chemotherapy andsurgery was as much the enemy as the malignant tumors. Hyman Fead embarked on an experimentaltreatment at UCLA Medical Center. No chemotherapy. No surgery. Instead, she takes the hormoneblockers Femara, by pill daily, and Lupron Depot, by injection every three months, to shrink the tumors.
More than six and a half years later, Beveryle is a vibrant, active woman living with cancer. The tumors arestill there but smaller, thanks to the treatment.
Hyman Fead has penned her story in I Can Do This: Living With Cancer, Tracing a Year of Hope (SBCCWellness Program; $19.99). Her goal is to comfort and energize other cancer patients. "To be the bestpossible patient today, be your own advocate," she says. To that end, she recommends consulting manydoctors - not just one or two.
