Wednesday 14 July Claire Smith Non-Executive Director, Mott MacDonald
Claire Smith spent 26 years as a British diplomat, serving in China, Germany and Pakistan. In an unconventional career,she interspersed traditional diplomatic postings with a private sector role and secondments to the German ForeignMinistry and the Cabinet Office. After leaving the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 2007, she reinventedherself and is now a non-executive director at Mott MacDonald, an employee-owned, multi-disciplinary consultancy;chair of governors at an East End primary school, recognised as “outstanding” by OFSTED and one of the 100 mostimproved schools in England; she sits on a government appeals panel, and is an occasional lecturer at the Universityof Westminster.
Thursday 9 September Dame Lynne Brindley DBE Chief Executive, The British Library
Dame Lynne Brindley has been the chief executive of the British Library since July 2000. She is the first woman andthe first information professional to have held the post. Since her appointment, Lynne has led a major strategicdevelopment and modernisation programme to ensure that the British Library remains relevant, innovative andaccessible in the 21st century.
Lynne came to the British Library from the University of Leeds where she was pro-vice-chancel or. Previously shewas a senior consultant with KPMG and has held leadership positions in information technology and knowledgemanagement at Aston University and at the London School of Economics.
Lynne was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours List 2008for services to education and the British Library.
Wednesday 6 October Belinda Phipps Chief Executive, NCT (National Childbirth Trust)
After completing a BSc (Microbiology), Belinda joined Glaxo Pharmaceuticals working in market research, sales, andmarketing. After a time as UK sales manager (the first female sales manager) she moved to become UK marketingmanager managing, among others, Zantac, Glaxo’s key profit generator. It was expected to decline in sales, howeveras a result of marketing the product in a new medical indication, sales grew. Belinda moved to study for an MBA atAshridge Management Col ege.
She joined the Blood Transfusion Service to lead the merger of two of the services to form the largest transfusionservice in the UK; the service won an NHS quality award for improvements in platelet quality and the DuncanNichol s Health Service leadership award. After a time managing a medical publishing company she became chiefexecutive officer of an NHS Trust. The Trust made substantial, sustained reductions in waiting times across alspecialties. As part of the NHS task force on waiting times, Belinda worked with many NHS Trust Boards to teachthe operation skil s needed to enable them to reduce their waits.
Belinda then joined the NCT as its chief executive officer. Belinda has three daughters al born at home and it wasthis experience that sparked her passion and enthusiasm for working to enable al parents to have a much betterexperience of becoming and being the parents of a new baby.
Tuesday 9 November Justine Roberts Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mumsnet
Justine Roberts is the founder and chief executive officer of Mumsnet, an online community of parents sharing advice,support and product recommendations. Over the last ten years Mumsnet has grown into the UK’s leading socialnetwork for mums with 1,000,000 monthly unique visitors.
Before that Justine wrote about footbal and cricket for the Daily Telegraph and before that she was a strategist forSG Warburg.
Justine studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at New Col ege, Oxford, is a mother of four; 11 year old identicaltwins - Lola and Scarlet, Jake who is seven and Jesse, four.
