In 1997 and 1998 unusual weather conditions existed around the world. For example, in the United States, Chicago and New York had very warm winters with almost no snow. At the same time, in the deserts of the American Southwest (places like New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona), it rained more than usual. There were hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean, but not in the Atlantic, although there usually were. Down south in Australia, there was a drought. The lack of rain caused great hardship for the people. For instance, several wildfires Asia experienced difficult weather conditions too. The Yangtze River in China was so low that boats could not travel up the river in August and September. In South America, heavy rains caused landslides in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Nicaragua. Many people lost their homes, and others lost their lives. The years 1997 and 1998 were bad for many parts of the world. Moreover, scientists are predicting other serious changes. Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean will be more disastrous. In the Pacific Northwest, the conditions will be good for the salmon in the Columbia River because of more rain. The rivers of China will be full, while South America may have drought Years of research mean that now scientists know more about weather cycles. The water in the oceans becomes warmer or cooler in cycles of years. We are now in a warming cycle. It began about 100 years ago, and it will probably continue for several centuries. Marine biologists and other scientists have been studying the coral reefs in the southern oceans. These scientists know that sea animals build the coral reefs near the shores of continents. Scientists study how coral grows. It grows more when water is warmer and less when water is cool. The scientists see a pattern in the growth of the coral. The pattern shows the temperature changes of the water. The coral reef is like reading a book about the history of the weather. Changes in the temperature of the water into the oceans cause changes in the weather and events around the world. 31. Changes in the weather and events around the world are often caused by 34. Riverboats could not travel up a river in 35. After 1998, conditions will be good for The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great change in education. Many psychologists and philosophers were discussing learning. They were observing children to understand them better. Because of their discussions, schools, teachers’ education, and curriculum all changed. One of these people was a Russian psychologist and educator. Like another psychologist, the Swiss philosopher Jean Piaget (1896-1980), Lev Vygotsky was interested in how children learn. Like Maria Montessori in Italy and Rudolf Steiner in Germany and Austria, he turned his ideas into action. Unlike Steiner and Montessori, however, he didn’t start any schools. Vygotsky and Piaget (pee-ah-ZHEY) did not always agree. According to Piaget, for example, a child developed first. Learning followed the development. In Vygotsky’s opinion, a child develops because of social interaction. The child, he said, learns everything twice. First the child copies what older and experienced people do and say. Then the child learns on an individual level, inside his or her head. A good relationship with an older person (like a parent or a teacher) helps the child learn quickly and well. Another of Vygotsky’s ideas is about when a child learns. Maria Montessori believed in a child’s “sensitive period.” During this time, she said, a child was ready to learn a particular skill. Steiner believed a child had to be ready to learn. To Vygotsky, this period is even more important. He said a child could learn only during this period. If a child did not learn during this period of time, the child would never learn the skill. For this reason, Vygotsky believed in education. Only human beings are born into history of learning. For centuries, people have been learning. A child must learn how to use the experience of the past. Hearing the stories is part of learning. Talking with other people (who know) makes the information real to a child. Vygotsky wrote about his ideas. He taught his students about his beliefs. Fortunately, his students saved his notes. Vygotsky died very young, at the age of 38. Even so, his ideas have been very important in the history of education. 38. Who believed in a “sensitive period” for learning a skill? 39. Who believed that development comes before learning? What you eat affects how your brain performs. Allergies to some grain foods such as corn and wheat have been linked to hyperactivity in children and antisocial behavior in adults. Studies of the effects of controlled diets for selected groups of violent criminals among prison populations show that removing grain foods from their
diets can result in a marked modification of their behavior as well as significantly increasing their attention spans. Most of the information on the effects of dietary control as a treatment for hyperactivity in children is anecdotal, but the result, so far, also appears to be positive. Many other foods also affect the brain. Dairy products, for instance, encourage production of melatonin, a brain chemical that helps induce sleep. Simple sugars and fats cut the brain’s oxygen supply, increasing drowsiness and reducing alertness. Protein-packed foods such as meat and eggs, on the other hand, help produce an amino acid called tyrosine that boosts alertness.
One way to use this knowledge might be to serve only high-protein, low-carbohydrate snacks during an important meeting to keep participants alert. Or when traveling across time zones on business, eat dairy foods to help you sleep at unaccustomed hours. (A) controlling hyperactivity through diet. (B) how different foods affect brain performance.
