A. VERB + TO + INFINITIVE

B. VERB + QUESTION WORD + TO + INFINITIVE
-We asked how to get to the station.
-Have you decided where to go for your holidays?
C. ADJECTIVE + TO + INFINITIVE
-I am happy to be here.
-I am sorry to say goodbye.
D. VERB + INFINITIVE (WITHOUT TO)
-Hot weather makes me feel uncomfortable.
-Bob let me drive his car yesterday.

C. VERB + -ING

D. PREPOSITION + -ING
-What did you do after leaving school?
-Before going out I phoned Ann.
-They got into the house by breaking a kitchen window.
-This knife is only for cutting bread.
-John went to work in spite of feeling ill.
-I bought a new motorcycle instead of going away on holiday.
-John left without finishing his dinner.
-Be careful when crossing the road.
-Jim hurt his arm while playing tennis.
ADJECTIVE + PREPOSITION + -ING
-He is good at playing tennis.
-She is interested in becoming a member of the club.
-They are used to sleeping in tents.
VERB + PREPOSITION + -ING

G. VERB + OBJECT + PREPOSITION + -ING

H. SET PHRASES + -ING

-It's not worth watching that film.
-There was no point in waiting, so we left.
VERBS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND THE VERB SHOP + -ING

III. INFINITIVE OR -ING
A. VERBS OF PERCEPTION + INFINITIVE (WITHOUT TO) OR -ING

B. VERBS FOLLOWED BY INFINITIVE OR -ING WITH NO CHANGE OF MEANING
-The baby began to cry.
-I would hate to see him again.

C. VERBS FOLLOWED BY INFINITIVE OR -ING WITH CHANGE OF MEANING
-You remember to do sth. before you do it.
-I remembered to lock the door before I left. (= I remembered to lock the door and then I
locked it.)

-Please remember to post the letter.
-Don't forget to post it.
-You remember doing sth. after you do it.
-I remember meeting her at Christmas last year. (= I met her and now I remember it.)
-I clearly remember locking the door before I left. (= I locked it and now I clearly remember
this.)

-I will never forget meeting her last year.
-Stop = halt, pause in order to do sth. else
-I stopped to ask the way.
-Stop = not continue, cease
-Stop talking.
-Try = attempt, make an effort to do sth.
-Please try to be quiet when you come home.
-Try = do sth. as an experiment or test
-I have got a terrible headache. I tried taking an aspirin but it didn't help.
