Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program
The Adelaide Festival Centre is delighted to announce that on her Australian tour, Yasmin Levy will be performing one show as part of the Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program at the Dunstan Playhouse on 16 February at 8.15pm. Described with a voice 'once heard, never forgotten', Adelaide audiences will be captivated by Yasmin Levy's deep, spiritual and moving style of singing. Born in Jerusalem in 1975, Yasmin Levy was introduced to Ladino singing and culture from a very young age. Her father was the leading figure in the world of research into and preservation of the Judeo-Spanish culture and Ladino language. Ladino, as it is popularly known, is an archaic form of Spanish with structures and vocabulary that can be traced back to the fifteenth century in Spain. Today, it remains one of the most moving and romantic musical traditions of all time. Yasmin preserves and revives the most beautiful songs from the Ladino / Judeo-Spanish heritage, mixing it with Andalucian Flamenco. Yasmin's debut album "Romance & Yasmin" created a stir amongst world music lovers across the globe. Her second album "La Juderia", featuring Ladino and Flamenco music in her unique emotive style, confirmed her status as one of the most promising new artists on the World Music scene. During 2006, Yasmin appeared widely, touring the UK, Canada, Mexico and Europe. In 2004, she performed at various international festivals and events including WOMAD Singapore, Forum Barcelona and the BBC's New Year's Day concert in London. In 2005 she toured the UK, Europe and the USA, including appearances at London's Ronnie Scott's and WOMAD festivals in the UK and Spain, closing the year with her debut performance at New York's Carnegie Hall. Yasmin has been nominated for the BBC World Music Awards in each of the past 3 years and recently received an award at the Babel Med Festival in Marseille, from the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for her work on the Dialogue between Cultures in her music. It is estimated there are less than 200,000 Ladino speakers world-wide and UNESCO recently recognised Ladino as one of the world's endangered languages. It is significant then that for her third album, "Mano Suave", released in October 2007, Yasmin Levy decided to return to her own Ladino roots. 'I have come to understand better than ever before that my role as an artist must be to help contribute in whatever small way I can to avoid Ladino music becoming extinct in the modern world. With this record I have chosen to return home to my ancestral roots and I couldn't be happier. 'On stage Levy is confident, seductive, and playful. She oozes passion.' The Independent, UK 'Levy is an artist of unnerving power' Newsday, New York
